Vision Theatre is excited to present the award winning play The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh. Directed and Designed by Ken Godmere, The Pillowman opens at the Arts Court Theatre on September 24, 2009 and runs to October 3, 2009.
The Pillowman focuses on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of brutal child murders taking place in his home town. Katurian, the writer, is interrogated by two sardonic, (with a touch of sadistic), State Police Officers, who use any means necessary in order to close the case, whether the suspect is guilty or innocent. What unfolds, however, is a twisted tale of suspense and horror. In the words of Katurian, "The first duty of a storyteller is to tell a story”, and playwright Martin McDonagh tells this tale in a unique blend of comedy and very intense darkness, offering a compelling world of story telling. Confronting the theme of artistic legacy, the dangerous potential of truth and narrative, the power of the storyteller The Pillowman is challenging material that is thought-provoking, frightening, and hilarious.
Hailed by critics and audiences alike, The Pillowman had its world premiere in 2003 at the Royal National Theatre, and subsequently received the 2004 Olivier Award for best New Play, The 2005 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. The Pillowman was also nominated for Best Play from The Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and the Evening Standard Awards.
Martin McDonagh’s other plays include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Cripple ofInishmaan and Tony nominees The Lonesome West and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. His short film Six Shooter won a 2006 Academy Award.
